Sunscreen Safety and Efficacy

We subscribe to a newsletter called Mom Goes Green . Recently, Mom (a/k/a Doreen) featured a link to the Environmental Working Group's eye-opening article on sunscreen protection. We learned that the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) proposed sunscreen regulations way back in 1978, but has never finalized them, leaving consumers in the dark as to what actually works, which ingredients are safe to use on human bodies, etc. Educate yourself and check out the EWG's list of recommended sunscreens.

June 14 update: The Environmental Working Group issued an update stating that the FDA has authored rules which will go into effect in June 2012. According to EWG, the rules "fall short". Even though they bar the sunscreen manufacturing industry from using misleading terminology like "waterproof" and "sunblock", they will continue to allow potentially dangerous ingredients in the products. Your best bet is to educate yourself so that you can make smart choices for yourself and your family.
