With the recent rash of natural disasters across the U.S. this spring, the focus of many affected individuals has yet again been turned to picking up the pieces and rebuilding lives and homes after these catastrophic events. We often talk about Greensburg being a model for rebuilding for communities similarly affected, but today we would like to acknowledge another city that is also doing its part to recover in a sustainable manner. Using eco-friendly building practices and historic preservation together in a big way to come back green, New Orleans is setting an amazing example. The Preservation Resource Center of New Orleans and an organization called Global Green USA are both working towards this goal of sustainable recovery through historic preservation. Rehabilitation of historic homes and businesses gives entire neighborhoods the chance to come back alive after being rocked by disaster, keep identity and sense-of-place intact, and generally require fewer raw materials (and therefore fewer dollars) to complete.
