City of Greensburg Nominated for VH1 "Do Something!" Award

The City of Greensburg has been nominated for special recognition in the City category of VH1’s 2010 Do Something! Awards.

Since 1996, DoSomething.org has been recognizing young adults and teenagers who go above and beyond in taking action to enact social change. They honor acts of volunteerism and encourage teens to get involved and make a difference both at home and in other communities as well. We in Greensburg have been the recipients of a remarkable level of generosity and outpouring of volunteer help. Over 25,000 volunteers have come to Greensburg to offer their time and skills in a multitude of ways towards the rebuilding effort here. In fact, we are still receiving requests and placing volunteers throughout the community more than three years after the tornado.

This year, DoSomething.org and VH1 have added ten new award categories, including Music Artist, Movie Star, Athlete, and City. We are happy to report that Greensburg has been nominated alongside the cities of Boston, MA; Salt Lake City, UT; Portland, OR; and Austin, TX. When asked as to why Greensburg was chosen, this is what representatives at DoSomething had to say:

“Finalists were chosen based on variety of factors including innovation and impact. At Do Something, we've known about the Greensburg, KS story for some time and felt it was a natural selection for a Do Something City. That is, to emerge from tragedy with such a sight on rebuilding a truly "green" city. Each Do Something city nominee has an interesting story and unique perspective on instilling their community with cause.”

We are thrilled that Greensburg's commitment to the local Green Initiative is receiving this kind of recognition. We at GreenTown encourage you to head over to VH1.com to cast your vote. Voting is open until midnight, July 18 and the winners will be announced live on Monday, July 19 at 8pm CST on VH1.

Full disclosure: Our blog is in the running to receive a $500 dollar donation for our efforts in promoting Greensburg's nomination. The more readers we are able to direct to the site to cast a vote, the better our chances are at receiving the donation.
