The Chain of Eco-Homes design contest co-sponsored by GreenTown and FreeGreen has been extended by a month, to August 15. We want to make sure that as many people who are interested get the opportunity to vie for the $10,000 grand prize and the chance to have their design built in Greensburg. In May, we wrote about this competition in detail here.
Briefly, we invite architects, designers and other creative folks to design a very green home using one of three cutting-edge wall systems. Winning designs may be built in our model green community as part of the Chain of Eco-Homes Project. The three winners (Grand Prize and two runners-up) will also be featured on the FreeGreen website where the house plans can be downloaded and used by anyone, anywhere – for free.
Winners will be determined from votes both by the public, and by people who are outstanding in the field of green architecture and design. We’ve gotten commitments from the following folks to serve as judges:
- Michelle Kaufmann, AIA, LEED AP – Founder of Michelle Kaufman Designs (and the green prefab movement)
- Allison Arieff – Editor-at-large of Sunset magazine, former editor of Dwell magazine, and current columnist (“By Design”) for The New York Times
- Lloyd Alter – Columnist for TreeHugger.com, associate professor at Ryerson University, and architect/developer/prefab builder
- Ron Jones- CEO, Green Builder Media, which publishes Green Builder magazine, distributed to National Association of Homebuilders members and through Home Depot
- Steve Hewitt– Greensburg City Administrator
- Ben Uyeda – FreeGreen.com Chief Architectural Officer, visiting lecturer at Northeastern University, former visiting lecturer at Cornell University
We have invitations out to several others who are prominent in the green architectural field. Watch this space for updates.
Here is the revised schedule for the design competition:
- Registration Deadline: August 15
- Submission Deadline: September 15
- Public Voting: September 15 - 30
- Round 1 Judging: October 1
- Round 2 Judging: October 5
- Finalist Judging: October 7
- Announcement of Winners : October 15

Please help us get the word out to aspiring designers. This is a very exciting competition and we can’t wait to see what our entrants come up with! For more information, or to submit a design, go to the home page for the Chain of Eco-Homes Competition.

I am an artist ( used to teach) and would love to relocate, have a house where the front could be a gallery. I heard you had a developer interested in promoting arts. If that is not, so, I certainly would like to see an art hub. It would go just fine with the green thrust. I am not an archectect but have done a marketing stint. My daughter happens to live in KC and a move might work just fine. Please let me know of any development relevant to what I have in mind or any direction I could be useful. I am currently located on Cape Cod in Massachusettts.
