Honors Continue for BNIM Master Plan

Last month, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) announced the winners of its 2009 Professional Awards. BNIM Architects (Kansas City, MO) was bestowed an Honor Award in the Analysis and Planning Category for their work on Greensburg’s Sustainable Comprehensive Plan (known locally as “The Master Plan”). The jury of this competition noted "This story has captured the imaginations of the public and the practice. They've created standards that are pragmatic, modest, and achievable. A plan to which other towns should aspire.”

Readers may be interested in the in-depth discussion of the Comprehensive Plan on the ASLA website. One telling sentence summarizes the overall sentiment about the project locally: “This is not about disaster recovery but instead a strategy to benefit from an opportunity to build sustainable systems with flexibility for future generations from the ground up.”

The ASLA jury considered entries from 600 contenders internationally, and selected the most inspired 49 projects from this group. Awards will be presented in September in Chicago at their annual meeting.

Among the other awards that have been presented to BNIM for Greensburg's Sustainable Master Plan are:
* American Society of Landscape Architecture Award, Prairie Gateway Chapter
* Citation Award, Unbuilt/Commissioned Work, AIA Kansas (American Institute of Architects)
* 2008 Sustainable Cities Award, Financial Times & Urban Land Institute
* Daniel Burnham Award, American Planning Association

Congratulations, BNIM!

Thank you for the nice post. We are very pleased that the Plan continues to garner national attention. The credit for this award and others like it deserves to be shared by the literally hundreds of folks (including the great people at Greentown) who contributed to the process. A great Plan reflects directly the teamwork of a community and by all measures Greensburg's vision continues to impact the whole country. Keep up the good work!
