On Monday, November 23, several Greensburg representatives will participate in a webinar hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy - Building Technologies Program. For those readers new to this technology, webinar means "web-based seminar", which is a presentation that is transmitted via the Internet. It is interactive in nature and features both audio and video transmissions.
The program is entitled "Greensburg: America's Model Green Community in Their Own Words" and will feature Bob Dixson, Mayor of Greensburg; Darin Headrick, Superintendent of Schools; Kelly Estes, President of BTI-Greensburg John Deere Dealership; Mike Estes, General Manager of BTI-Greensburg; and Daniel Wallach, Executive Director of Greensburg GreenTown. The webinar will focus on how Greensburg "found new life and purpose" once the community made the decision to build back after the tornado as a model of sustainability. The content is designed to be of interest to a wide target audience: federal agencies, state energy offices, renewable energy and energy efficiency associations, architects, residential and commercial builders, planning firms, and homeowners.
Here is an overview of questions the speakers will address, taken from the DOE website:
- How did a community of individuals from rural Kansas come together so cohesively to embrace a vision of sustainability and to provide leadership both locally and throughout the nation?
- What were the challenges with unifying a small town behind what many perceived to be a radical cultural shift?
- How can the work of this small town be scaled to meet the challenges of other, larger communities?
- What motivated citizens to not only recover from an enormous tragedy, but to take on another level of education and effort in becoming a "model green community"?
- What does Greensburg's experience mean for the rest of our country?
Each of the speakers has a lot to offer the audience, from his own unique perspective and association with the Green Initiative. The program is already generating a lot of interest, with several hundred folks registered. The webinar will run from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Eastern/noon-1:30 Central/11-12:30 Mountain/10 - 11:30 Pacific Time.
