Frequently Asked Questions > Green Building Questions > What will I be sacrificing?
Green building doesn’t mean doing without; it means doing more, with less. You will have greater comfort and fewer bills. You will have more money, by paying for less energy and less water. You can have more windows, and lose less heat. You will have newer appliances, that use much less energy than your old ones. Older homes, like the ones being replaced, are often crafted homes of another era. They were often beautiful and charming but they also had drawbacks like being drafty and uncomfortable and were very expensive to maintain. The average home in America today has a total three square feet of holes in its shell. Green homes are built tight for maximum efficiency.
One analogy we like to make, is that if you have a car from the 1970’s or 80’s and it gets wrecked in an accident, you are most likely to purchase a brand new model to replace it. While the older car had different craftsmanship or character, the newer cars have the benefit of decades of technological advances in safety and comfort. This is also true with homes. The newer homes have the benefit of many decades of technological progress in the many systems and appliances that serve that home.
